HCYP TRAVEL & MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL LEAGUE ELIGIBILITY

HCYP SUNDAY TRAVEL LEAGUE

HCYP Sunday Travel Basketball League is open for boys in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. The league is open to any teams meeting the grade requirement. The Travel League is divided into two sub-divisions, Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV); which allows HCYP Middle School League Teams (which play on Saturdays) to play in the Sunday Travel League. 

All Travel Teams that sign up will play in one of the following sub-divisions:

·         6th & 7th (B-Level Team) Grade Teams                                      JV Division

·         7th Grade (A-level Team) & 8th Grade Teams                        Varsity Davison

 A-Level Teams

a)       Will play in the Varsity Travel League

b)      Will not be allowed to participate in the HCYP Middle School League or Rec League

c)       A-Level players cannot participate in Middle School League games or Rec League games

d)      Cannot participate with multiple teams in the same league

B-Level Teams

a)       Will play in the Junior Varsity (JV) Travel League.

b)      Will not be allowed to participate in the HCYP Middle School League or Rec League

c)       B-Level players cannot participate in the HCYP Middle School or Rec League games

d)      Cannot participate with multiple team in the same league

Active participation in both Travel and Middle School League practices in BOTH leagues is mandatory to participate in games.

HCYP MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL LEAGUE

The HCYP MS Basketball League is designed for boys and girls in grades 6th – 8th and provides an environment which allows for further development of players in a safe, fun, and competitive league. While HCYP encourage all our teams to play hard and win, the primary focus is to have fun and continue to build on the fundamentals of basketball. The Middle School League is divided into two sub-divisions, East and West; and further sub-divided into two levels, Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV). The Saturday league if for Middle School teams only.

Varsity

a)       All grades between 6th - 8th are eligible to play Varsity team (if selected by team coaches) 

b)      Players must attend at least 50 % of all basketball practices and games, including tournaments

c)       Players are not allowed to play in the Travel League JV Division or HCYP Rec League

Junior Varsity (JV)

a)       Players in 6th & 7th grade only are eligible to play on the JV team

b)      Players must attend at least 50 % of all basketball practices and games, including tournaments

c)       Players are not allowed to play in the HCYP Rec League

PLAYER COMMITMENT

·         Players must demonstrate a commitment to their Team and the HCYP Program.

·         Players must be IN COMPLIANCE with the HCYP Middle School & Travel Eligibility requirement.

·         Player must pay his/her fees in full prior to participating in the program.

·         Players must play on the team for which they are selected and cannot request specific team placement. The exception to this commitment, is players on the “Howard United Middle School” basketball teams

·         Once a player is ROSTERED (selected to a team), they cannot opt out of playing for that team. If a player chooses to opt out, the player cannot participate in any HCYP program for the current year. In addition, the player will not be permitted to try-out for Travel Basketball the following year. Further if a player opts out after the team selection process, the registration fee will NOT be refunded. This does not apply to an injured player.

·         Earning a position on a travel or middle school team does not guarantee an automatic position in future years. All players must tryout in subsequent years.

·         Attendance at practice and tournaments is mandatory, unless the coach permits the absence.

COACH COMMITMENT

·         All HCYP Coaches Must Complete Concussion Training Course Prior to First Practice! The link for this training is located on the HCYP website (www.hcyp.org)

·         CDC Concussion Certification must be provided to league commissioner prior to hosting any team tryouts or practices

·         All HCYP Coaches are required to complete the HCYP Background Investigation prior to the beginning of the basketball season (form on league website)

·         All HCYP Coaches are required to attend the HCYP Coaches Clinic at Long Reach High School, 6101 Old Dobbin Ln, Columbia, MD 21045 – tentative scheduled for Sunday, November 12, 2017 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm (kid’s skills clinic 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm) will take a mandatory “coaches exam”

·         All coaches are required to attend coaches’ meetings and manage their teams “TeamSnap” accounts

·         Coaches are responsible for the gym during their practice and games. They are required to make sure everyone behaves properly and that there is no food or drinks (only water is allowed) allowed into gym

By taking this free, online course and using what you learn, you will be well positioned to improve the culture of concussion. Your actions can help create a safe environment for young athletes so that they can stay healthy, active, and thrive – both on and off the playing field.

Once you complete the training and quiz, you can print out a certificate, making it easy to show your league or school you are ready for the season.

What Will I Learn in This Training?

This course will help you:

·         Understand a concussion and the potential consequences of this injury,

·         Recognize concussion signs and symptoms and how to respond,

·         Learn about steps for returning to activity (play and school) after a concussion, and

·         Focus on prevention and preparedness to help keep athletes safe season-to-season.

We can help athletes stay active and healthy by knowing the facts about concussion and when it is safe for athletes to return to play.
