2019 Spring Rec Baseball

The Howard County Youth Program (HCYP) Spring Recreational Baseball program is a great way for kids to be introduced to baseball for the first time or to continue to improve their skills. This program runs from March through June. All practices will be held at a local Howard County School or Park field. All games will be held at Kiwanis-Wallas Park.

Please sign up in the division that is presented to you during the registration process. The division selected is based on the participant’s age as of 8/31/2019. If you would like to request to play in a division other than the division presented, please make a note in the COMMENTS section of the registration form. Those decisions are made on a case-by-case basis by the division commissioners and the league commissioner.

Additional information about the baseball divisions, registration, and draft of participants can be found on the HCYP Baseball web page for each individual division.

Rookie and Pinto Registration Details

  • In our Rookie and Pinto divisions, we try to accommodate as many requests from parents as possible. You can request a specific coach or to play with certain friends. However, please note that we are NOT able to accommodate all requests. In any given year, we are usually able to accommodate about 75% of all requests. The most prevalent reason for an unfulfilled request is the 13 player limit for each team. When we have many requests for groups of specific kids, the number of teammate requests far exceed the total number of players on each team. We are NOT able to accommodate any requests for practice days or times.
  • Rookie games will be every Saturday at either 9 AM or 5 PM and practices will be during the week on a day and time determined by each coach.
  • Pinto games will be during the week and practices will be every Saturday at a time determined by each coach.
  • Weather permitting, there will be 10 scheduled games during the season for each Rookie and Pinto team.
  • Prices:
    • $125 ($15 discount for early bird registration by 12/31) per player in Rookie (Ages 5-6)
    • $185 ($20 discount for early bird registration by 12/31) per player in Pinto (Ages 7-8)

International, Minor, and Major Registration Details

  • Our International, Minor, and Major divisions are known as our “Little League” divisions.
  • Players within the International, Minor, and Major playing age should register to the Little League division.
  • NEW Little League players who DID NOT attend the October or January evaluations, will be assigned to an organization by the draft coordinator.
  • New players or players returning HCYP Little League players requesting a redraft are drafted to an organization, e.g. the Yankees, before the start of the season. To request a redraft, enter "REDRAFT" in the Additional Comments field during the registration process.
  • After being placed in an organization, coaches will evaluate the players and place the player in the appropriate division based on age, skill, and roster size.
  • Once drafted to an organization, the player remains with that organization throughout the little league divisions.
  • Younger siblings entering Little League are automatically assigned to the same organization of elder siblings unless otherwise requested during registration.
  • Weather permitting, teams in all little league divisions for an organization play games on the same day at the same time. In other words, the International Yankees, Minor Yankees, and Major Yankees play games at the same time on the same day but on different fields. There will be some exceptions during the season for make-up games and schedule conflicts.
  • Each team organization will play a game on Saturday and one or two games during the week.
  • Weather permitting, there will be 15 scheduled games during the regular season.
  • Price: $245 ($25 discount for early bird registration by 12/31) per player (Ages 9-12)

Pony Registration Details

  • All Pony players are redrafted each year. Players are drafted by coaches and not assigned by the league, so please do not request a specific coach in your registration form.
  • Each team will have one game on Saturday and one or two games during the week.
  • Weather permitting, there will be 15 scheduled games during the regular season.
  • Price: $245 ($25 discount for early bird registration by 12/31) per player (Ages 13-14)

Colt Registration Details

  • All Colt players are redrafted each year. Evaluations for Colt players will be held in March. More information will follow once a date is determined.
  • Each team will have approximately three games each week.
  • Weather permitting, there will be 15 scheduled games during the regular season.
  • Price: $245 ($25 discount for early bird registration by 12/31) per player (Ages 15-18)

We are NOT able to accommodate any requests for practices dates and times. Practices are determined by our volunteer coaches to accommodate their schedule after all players have been allocated to teams. Please DO NOT request practice times in your registration.

Baseball: 2019 Evaluations

Starting at the International level (Playing Age 9), players are drafted into an organization and play within that organization for the International, Minor, and Major level. For example, if you are drafted by the Reds, you will start by playing at the International level and work your way up through the Reds organization until you graduate to the Pony level at age 13. In order to evenly distribute new HCYP players and rising players entering our international division, we conduct two skill evaluation sessions before the spring season.

Evaluations will be held on Saturday, October 20th from 1-3:30 PM at Kiwanis-Wallas Park (Field 3) and Saturday January 26th from 9:30-12:30 PM at Top Gun Baseball Academy, 1332 Londontown Blvd, Sykesville, MD 21784.

The following players are REQUIRED to participate in ONE of our 2 evaluation sessions:

  • All players who will be 9 years old on August 31, 2019 and who did NOT play in HCYP at the International level Spring 2018.
  • All players who will be age 9 thru 14 on August 31, 2019 who did NOT play HCYP Recreational baseball Spring 2018.
  • All players who will be age 8 on August 31, 2019 and would like an opportunity to play up in the International Division for the HCYP Spring 2019 season.

Each year very few kids under the age of 9 are permitted to play in the International Division. We must first place all 9 year olds into that division and if any spots remain, we will consider those who are age 8 who scored very high in evaluations. NOTE: Players who will be age 8 and played up in International for the Fall 2018 season are not guaranteed an International placement.

The following players are NOT required to participate in an evaluation:

  • Players who played in HCYP at the International, Minor, Major, or Pony levels in the Spring 2018 season.  NOTE: Colt evaluations will be held separately.
  • Players who will be age 5-7 on August 31, 2019.
  • Players who will be age 8 on August 31, 2019 and do NOT wish to play up in International in the Spring.

The evaluations consist of 3 stations:

  • Fielding & Throwing
  • Hitting
  • Pitching

You can come anytime during the evaluation period and leave when you have completed all of the stations. Depending on wait times at each station, the total evaluation time for each player will be around 30 minutes. We will start checking players in 30 minutes before the session begins. The last check-in time for the day will be at 30 minutes before the end of the session. Please note that the busiest time is often the first hour.
